GCS Supported Track – VRP Off Road Under Construction !

November 27th, 2009

Owner of VRP Hobbies and Raceway, Vince Ponder hit the Georgia Racing scene earlier this year. No rookie to R/C Racing, Vince was known to the RC veterans as a “ring master” of RC in the early 90’s. VRP held over 60 races in 9 months: 1/8 Off Road, On Road Carpet, Off Road Carpet, 1/5 Off Road, and the new dirt oval provides something for almost any RC enthusiast. With years of experience in the construction industry and RC, VRP Hobbies and Raceway, is destined for success.

After a very successful year of holding numerous club races, 3 mini-series races, including a joint Series with Loganville RC, and Round 5 of the Georgia Championship Series, Vince decided it was time for the 1/8 off road track to have a new face.  “The Rock”, (as it came to be called) was leveled shortly after the Fall For All Finals on November 21st . Vince said that the track will have more technical sections, while maintaining a smooth flow layout. Vince mentioned that the track will have some new features, making their track stand out. I tried to obtain the top secret photos of the new layout from his wife Tracy.  However, Vince keeps them in a place that no one has access to,except for him. Below are a few shots of the construction phase. Local excitement builds!

Finals – Dalton Ga

October 30th, 2009

Weather going into the weekend looked great! However, the Rain Gods laid down some serious water leading up the practice day on Friday. With the track under inches of water only a few hours before, practice starting on time was out. Dalton RC Speedway is no ordinary track, it possesses some of the cleanest, richest red clay dirt in Georgia. Ed Weaver and his dedicated track crew worked for hours getting the track in top shape by late afternoon. By 4:00pm the track looked great and the racers started practicing. The weekend was sure to be great!

Pro Buggy –TQ Racing Driver Shannon Amos takes the race win but didn’t have the points to catch Dalton RC’s Edward Weaver who captures the GCS Title after an intense points battle with Losi duo Cole Ogden(3rd overall) and Shane Ogden(2nd overall). Paul Conway 4th and 2008 GCS Champion Kent Darley finishes 5th overall.

Pro Truggy – Panther’s Shane Ogden sprayed down his competitors with Champaign in the winner’s circle after capturing the 2009 GCS Title. Panther driver Randy Cooper takes his Sidewinder fueled Mugen into the circle after placing 2nd overall. Rick Marr 3rd , Kent Darley 4th and Xrays Tim Smith 5th.

Intermediate Buggy – “Mr. Excitement” Clay Walker takes the Championship win over Aaron Weaver. Weaver tied with Walker going into this race, had mechanical trouble in the main dropping him to 3rd overall. Marcus Izzo brings his A-Game by taking the 45 minute race win securing his 2nd place overall finish for the season. Travis Melton 4th and Mitchell Burkey 5th.

Intermediate Truggy - Incredible Race! 45 minutes of side-by-side Truggy action. Patrick Lowery and Alabama’s Kendall Burnett swap the lead for a solid 45 minutes. New comer Burnett takes 2nd less than a second behind Lowery. Ashley Fields is crowned State Champion after a great performance all year. Patrick Lowery 2nd, Ryan Hatton 3rd, David Hart 4th and Travis Dobbs 5th.

SLASH – Gene Snipes celebrates like a true champion in the GCS winners circle after becoming the 1st Georgia SLASH Champion. Snipes, dedicated from the start of the year, takes the points win with Eric Madden finishing 2nd. Joel “Stickman” Judkins takes 3rd, Kent Darley 4th and Travis”T-Bone” Melton 5th.
